UPLIFT Video Lessons: Practical Skills for Immersive Film & Literary Tourism

Four hands-on video lessons that take you from strategy to creation  drawn from our immersive workshops across Iceland, Lithuania, Ireland, and Slovenia.

Immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing how visitors connect with stories and places. But knowing where to start can be daunting. The UPLIFT video lessons turn the ideas behind immersive tourism into something you can actually do – one clear, practical step at a time. Whether you run a small tourism business, teach the next generation of tourism professionals, or are simply curious about what's possible, these lessons are designed to meet you where you are.

What do these video lessons offer?

This collection brings the UPLIFT immersive workshops to a wider audience as short, on-demand lessons you can watch anytime. Each one tackles a different piece of the puzzle: how to think about your brand and your audience, how to choose between VR, AR, and XR, how to build a virtual experience from scratch, and how to use QR codes to bring any location to life. No technical background is assumed – the lessons start from curiosity, not code, and focus on tools and approaches that are realistic for small organisations.

Who are these lessons for?

The lessons are designed for:
Tourism SMEs and business owners – especially family-run and smaller operators – who want to add immersive, story-led experiences without a large budget or an in-house tech team.
VET educators and trainers looking for ready-made, classroom-friendly material on immersive tourism.
VET students and recent graduates building the digital and storytelling skills the tourism sector is asking for.
Tourism professionals, guides, and destination organisations curious about how VR, AR, AI, and QR can deepen visitor engagement at film and literary destinations.

What is the educational value of these lessons?

Each lesson is a self-contained, reusable learning resource that can be watched on its own or built into a wider course, workshop, or training session. Together they offer:
A clear path from strategy – brand, audience, value – to hands-on creation – building a VR tour, deploying QR experiences.
Real European examples of immersive film and literary tourism in action.
Practical frameworks and step-by-step methods you can apply to your own destination straight away.
A focus on free and low-cost tools, so the ideas are achievable, not just aspirational.

What will you gain from the series?

By the end of the series, you'll understand not only what immersive technology can do, but how to use it well – leading with story, place, and emotion, and letting the technology serve the experience rather than steal the show. You'll come away with the confidence to plan, position, and create your own immersive offering, and the know-how to keep improving it.

Because the most powerful tourism experiences aren't just places people visit – they're stories people remember.

The Lessons

Watch the lessons in sequence for a complete journey from strategy to hands-on creation, or jump straight to the one you need – each lesson stands on its own.

Lesson 1 – Marketing, Branding & Goals

Positioning immersive experiences within your brand, audience, and goals

Before you build anything, you need to know who it's for and why it matters. This lesson reframes immersive technology as a means, not the message: visitors buy a feeling, a story, and a memory – not a headset. You'll learn how a new immersive experience fits within both your destination brand and your own business brand, how to focus on the audiences you can genuinely serve instead of marketing to "everyone," and how to turn those audiences into vivid, named personas. From there, you'll write a single, sharp value proposition and connect it to measurable goals you can track and refine – with examples ranging from Netflix House and Dubrovnik's "King's Landing" to the consortium's own 1238: The Battle of Iceland.

What you'll learn:

How to position an immersive experience so it deepens – rather than dilutes – your brand
How to segment your audience and turn segments into personas
How to write a clear, jargon-free value proposition
How to set SMART marketing goals and build a loop of position → target → value → measure → refine

Lesson 2 – VR, AR and XR in Tourism: From Technology to Experience

Choosing the right technology to tell your story

VR, AR, XR, AI – the options can be overwhelming. This lesson cuts through the noise with one guiding principle: don't choose the technology, choose the experience, and let the technology follow. You'll explore the real strengths and trade-offs of virtual and augmented reality, learn when each one makes sense, and look at concrete European examples of immersive experiences that work – and why. The lesson closes with a practical design exercise that walks you through shaping an experience for a real destination, from target audience and story to mechanics and technology.

What you'll learn:

The strengths, limitations, and best uses of VR, AR, and XR
How to judge whether a technology genuinely enhances the visitor experience
How AI and recognisable "character guides" can power storytelling and personalisation
A step-by-step method for designing an immersive experience around your own location

Lesson 3 – Creating a VR Experience

Building your first virtual reality experience on a budget

This is the hands-on lesson for businesses ready to try, not just talk. It's designed for complete beginners and shows that a first VR experience can be created for low or no cost. You'll start with a simple image-and-audio VR scene that you can generate with the help of AI tools and host on your own website, then move up to a fully walkable, teleport-style virtual tour built from 360° photos – the kind you can share with a single link on your website, social media, or email signature.

What you'll learn:

How to capture and prepare 360° photos of your location
How to use AI to generate a basic, web-based VR experience
How to build a walkable, teleport-style virtual tour with free tools
How to host your tour and share it publicly with a simple link

Lesson 4 – Creative Uses of QR Codes

Turning any location into an immersive story

You don't need a headset to create an immersive moment. This lesson shows how a simple QR code can transform passive sightseeing into interactive storytelling – letting a visitor scan a code at a filming location to watch the scene that was shot there, or unlock a character's narration at a literary landmark. You'll explore creative applications across film and literary destinations, weigh the advantages and the challenges (and their solutions), and follow a clear, step-by-step guide to creating, testing, and placing your own QR experiences.

What you'll learn:

Creative ways to use QR codes at film locations and literary destinations
Multimedia content ideas, from audio tours and archival photos to digital scavenger hunts
The advantages of QR codes – low-cost, contactless, sustainable, trackable – and how to overcome common challenges
A practical, five-step process for creating and placing QR codes effectively
