Workshops and Clinics

Immersive tourism does not have to mean expensive virtual reality equipment or complex technology. Experiences can be made more immersive through storytelling, audio, QR codes, projections, smartphone content, interactive activities and many other accessible approaches.

UPLIFT has developed four practical workshops and four accompanying implementation clinics that, in combination with our video lessons, are design to help you explore these possibilities and turn ideas into action.

Designed specifically with SMEs and smaller organisations in mind, the resources recognise the realities of limited budgets, different levels of technical knowledge and varying access to resources. Whether you are completely new to immersive tourism or already have an idea you would like to develop, you can start at the level that works for you.

How to use the resources

The workshops and implementation clinics are designed to be flexible, practical and easy to use.

You can work through all four topics in sequence to create a comprehensive roadmap for your immersive experience or select an individual topic that responds to a particular challenge or stage in your development.

The resources are designed to help you move progressively from ideas to action. You can begin with simple, affordable quick wins that could be tested within the next six months, before considering how your experience might develop over the next few years.

By working with the resources, you will be able to better understand what immersion could mean for your company or organisation, identify realistic opportunities, test ideas before making major investments, and develop clear next steps for creating engaging film and literary tourism experiences.

Workshops

UPLIFT’s Workshops give you the space to explore the key questions behind an immersive experience before deciding what to build.

Rather than beginning with technology, the workshops encourage you to think first about your business, audience, story, resources and goals. Guided questions and activities help you identify opportunities, discuss challenges and consider what type and level of immersion is right for your context.

The four workshops can be completed individually or with colleagues, partners and other local stakeholders. They can also be used by educators and trainers working with tourism businesses or aspiring entrepreneurs.

Together, the workshops provide a structured journey from understanding immersive tourism to developing, financing and promoting an experience.

Implementation clinics

UPLIFT’s Implementation Clinics help you turn the ideas explored during the workshops into practical action.

Each clinic contains exercises and tasks that encourage you to develop, test and refine your own immersive tourism ideas. The focus is not on creating a large or technically complex experience immediately. Instead, you are encouraged to start at an appropriate scale, experiment with accessible solutions and build your experience gradually.

The clinics can support anything from an early-stage idea using simple storytelling or QR codes to a longer-term plan incorporating more advanced digital tools.

Used alongside the workshops, they provide a practical roadmap for moving from “What could we do?” to “How can we make it happen?”

This topic introduces the core ideas behind immersive tourism and explores different levels of immersion, from simple low-tech storytelling approaches to more advanced digital experiences using technologies such as augmented and virtual reality. You will consider what is realistic for your company or organisation based on your goals, skills, resources and budget.

The accompanying workshop helps you identify opportunities for immersion within your existing visitor experience, while the implementation clinic guides you in developing your own immersion roadmap.

Use this topic to: understand the possibilities of immersive tourism, identify the right level of technology for your organisation and create a realistic pathway for future development.

This topic helps you define your target audiences and consider what you want visitors to think, feel and do during their experience. You will explore how your brand, destination, literary connection, film location or cultural asset can provide the foundation for engaging immersive storytelling.

The workshop guides you through questions around positioning, audiences, visitor needs and storytelling. The implementation clinic then helps you translate those ideas into narratives, visitor journeys and interactive story elements that can be tested and developed.

Use this topic to: clarify your audience, strengthen your positioning, define the experience you want to create and develop an immersive story that remains authentic to your brand and values.

This topic explores the practical and financial considerations involved in creating immersive experiences. It helps you assess potential costs and identify affordable, scalable approaches, including prototypes, low-cost pilots, phased budgets and gradual investment.

The workshop supports discussion around financial priorities, available resources and potential risks. Through the implementation clinic, you can begin creating a realistic budget and consider how an idea could be tested before committing significant resources.

The topic also introduces important legal, copyright and ethical considerations, including permissions, ownership of content, data protection and cultural sensitivity. Addressing these issues early can help you avoid common problems and develop an experience responsibly.

Use this topic to: understand potential costs, develop a realistic financial plan, explore low-cost ways to test your concept and identify the legal and ethical considerations relevant to your experience.

This topic looks at how storytelling can support the promotion and sale of immersive film and literary tourism experiences. You will explore how to communicate your experience across websites, social media and tourism platforms while maintaining a clear and authentic story. You will also consider practical elements such as pricing, booking and the visitor journey from initial discovery through to arrival and participation.

The workshop helps you define the story you want to communicate and identify the channels most relevant to your audiences. The implementation clinic then supports you in turning that story into practical promotional content and a simple, effective route to booking or participation.

The goal is to make it easy for potential visitors to discover your experience, understand its value, connect with its story and take the next step.

Use this topic to: develop your promotional story, choose appropriate communication channels, simplify the journey from discovery to booking and turn visitor interest into action.
